Health Administration Specialists are integral to the healthcare community, focusing on the business side of healthcare. There are opportunities to work in various settings. Health Administration Specialists are responsible for managing administrative functions, ensuring compliance, and staying current with healthcare trends. This position may lead to career advancement in management.
The Health Administration Specialist AAS program provides the knowledge necessary for an administrative career in healthcare. Course work includes medical terminology, health insurance, electronic health records, human resources, and management. This program offers a combination of online and in-person coursework. Students pursuing this program may choose to continue their education in areas such as a healthcare management degree from Iowa State University.
All programs require that students complete all coursework as outlined and maintain a 2.0 grade point average.
Medical Billers and Coders are vital in streamlining the healthcare reimbursement cycle. In the Medical Billing and Coding Diploma program, students learn to interpret patient data, translate health records, and obtain medical diagnoses and procedures for reimbursement, reporting, and statistics. Coursework includes medical terminology, diagnostic coding (ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS), procedural coding (CPT & HCPCS), reimbursement methods, electronic health records, and the human body in health and disease. This type of work is specialized and technical, requiring attention to detail, effective communication skills, and professionalism.
The Medical Billing and Coding program is available online with virtual lecture options. Graduates from this program may work in a variety of healthcare settings such as a physician’s office, surgery center, hospital, etc. There are certification options available from AHIMA and AAPC after program completion. A Patient Access Specialist serves as the initial point of contact for patients and the face of the organization. The Patient Access Specialist Certificate program prepares students for an entry level position in a healthcare setting. Coursework is available online with optional virtual lectures.
Upon completing the program, students may obtain positions such as Patient Access Specialist, Patient Advocate, or Patient Experience Representative. Many healthcare settings depend upon the clerical support provided by the Patient Access Specialist to create patient connections. This includes hospitals, clinics, health insurance organizations, home health agencies, etc.
