Hy-Vee donated $100,000 to the nearly-completed DMACC Transportation Institute (TI), located on the northside of Des Moines. Hy-Vee’s generous donation is the latest among state, federal and other private-sector gifts, totaling about half of the $9 million project.

The new facility includes an 8,600-square-foot building featuring sound-proof classrooms, a three-story inspection bay and student study space. Outside, construction workers replaced the 12-acre concrete training course and added to retention ponds and planned greenspace.

The DMACC TI plans to move from the old facility to the new building next month on December 18.

Transportation Institute Tour

Dr. Jenny Foster leads the Hy-Vee delegation on a tour of the nearly-completed DMACC Transportation Institute (TI). Steven Venegas, Hy-Vee Executive Vice President of Supply Chain and Transportation, said DMACC’s TI graduates are important to Hy-Vee and Iowa’s trucking industry. “Our business continues to grow,” said Venegas. “As a result, our sponsorship and donation to DMACC underscores our commitment to hire qualified drivers across our company.” The Hy-Vee executive noted that his company has 440 tractors, 1,000 trailers and its 500 drivers log 40 million miles each year.

The new TI facility has the potential of nearly doubling the number of graduates to 500 students who earn their Commercial Drivers License (CDL) when it opens for classes in January.
