Career Academy Programs at
DMACC Ames Hunziker Center

The DMACC Career Academy located at the Ames Hunziker Center offers career and technical programs to high school students. The Career Academy serves students from Ames, Ballard, Collins-Maxwell, Colo-Nesco, Gilbert, Nevada and Roland-Story as well as numerous students from other districts. Some of the educational programs include state-of-the-art facilities for automotive technology, building trades, criminal forensics, culinary arts, health, teaching academy, and welding.

Classes Offered

These classes provide area high school students with excellent educational opportunities. All DMACC Career Academy programs are one year long (two semesters). Several academies offer a second year of programming. Students must complete Year 1 before enrolling in Year 2. Registration in these courses is handled by local guidance counselors and principals.

Programs Available

The Automotive Technology program is designed to prepare students for employment in the automotive service industry. This technological program allows students to gain experience with shop tools, automotive engines, brakes, suspension and alignment. Twenty-five DMACC credits are available upon completion of all DMACC Career Academy course offerings.

*Upon successful completion of all year 1 and year 2 coursework, students will earn an Automotive Minor Repair and Vehicle Maintenance Certificate

This program allows students to engage in experiential learning in the areas of Construction and Carpentry. Twenty-one DMACC credits are available upon completion of all DMACC Career Academy course offerings. Completion of this program as a high school student provides the opportunity to complete the college diploma program in two college semesters. Transportation to job site is required.

The Business Academy is an exploratory academy for students who have an interest in entering the business profession but are not sure what pathway they want to go. Students are provided a foundation of business-related courses that will prepare them for entrance in multiple business-related postsecondary opportunities. Fourteen DMACC credits are available upon completion.

This program introduces students to the field of criminal justice. They encounter project-based learning in Introduction to Criminal Justice and Juvenile Delinquency, as well as participate in hands-on experiences in Criminal Investigation and Criminal Justice Report Writing. Students begin career exploration through tours and guest speakers in Survey of Criminal Justice Agencies. Included is a college preparation course, covering such topics as time management, study strategies, and financing their education. This year-long program includes fourteen DMACC credits.

Through hands-on experience, students are introduced to the scientific principles used in food preparation, the hospitality industry, and fundamentals of dining and sanitation. Fourteen DMACC credits are available upon completion of all DMACC Career Academy course offerings.

This semester-long program will provide students the opportunity to explore careers in healthcare and work toward CNA training. Seven DMACC credits are available upon completion of all DMACC Career Academy course offerings.

The Teacher Academy provides students with an opportunity to explore education-related professions and take part in real-life teaching experiences. Students will spend a total of 120 hours shadowing elementary and secondary school teachers during portions of their assigned class time. Courses fulfill Level I Field Experience requirement at many four-year colleges.

This program allows students to engage in experiential learning in the area of welding. In addition to a welding skill base, students will explore the greater career field of advanced manufacturing through workplace experience. Eleven credits are available upon completion of all DMACC Career Academy course offerings.
