The Iowa Board of Nursing (IBON) put new rules into place effective September 1, 2019 for nurses who are reactivating their license after a period of inactivity in any jurisdiction for five years or more. Please note, there may also be other circumstances when the IBON requires a nurse refresher course to be taken.
The new rules may be found by clicking on this link: https://www.legis.iowa.gov/docs/iac/rule/04-24-2019.655.3.10.pdf
The Nurse Refresher course is designed for nurses returning to the healthcare field and will assist in meeting the requirements for RN License Reactivation in the State of Iowa. (For other States, please consult with your Board of Nursing)
For full license reactivation the participant will need to complete both Nurse Refresher RN Part 1 and the Nurse Refresher RN Part 2 courses successfully.
- The primary goal of the two-part Nurse Refresher-RN course is to assist inactive registered nurses to review and update their nursing knowledge and skills, and gain confidence returning to practice.
- A practicing or currently registered nurse who is NOT inactive and desires to update their nursing knowledge and earn Nursing Contact Hours may also take this course and may only choose to take the Part 1 course. Please check with the IBON as to your status and requirements.
The Nurse Refresher RN Part 1 Course and the Part 2 Course have each been approved for 40 Nursing Contact Hours, through DMACC IBON Provider #22.

- You will need a computer and access to it, in order to complete this course.
- The course is taught through the Canvas Web based learning platform.
- Assignments and learning will be completed through weekly reading, discussion boards, quizzes, and other methods as assigned.
- A final course percentage grade of 78% or higher will be equivalent to a passing grade.
- You will receive an E-Book Registration Code once class begins for your textbook access
- You will also receive two letters from DMACC giving you your DMACC Student ID number and access to your DMACC Email address. You will use your DMACC credentials to log into the MY DMACC Web Based Learning system.
The Nurse Refresher-RN Part 2 is designed to be a face-to-face clinical experience that will be arranged in collaboration with the DMACC teaching faculty and contracted clinical sites. Some Course Requirements include:
- You will need to have regular and reliable internet
- You will need a computer and access to it, in order to complete this course.

- You must have successfully completed the DMACC Nurse Refresher-Part 1 Course, before you can take this course.
- You will work with the faculty liaison to set up the clinical partnership and preceptor experience in an acute care setting.
- You will work with the IBON to acquire a limited authorization to practice, in order to complete the required clinical experience.
- You will work scheduled shifts that consist of 8-12 hour shifts (may include days, evenings, nights or weekends) these are scheduled in advance and in coordination with the clinical preceptor at your site.
- You as the student will develop learning objectives, complete clinical time log and weekly journal.
- You will also collaborate with the DMACC teaching faculty and preceptors for your formative and summative clinical evaluations and will provide a written summary of the learning that was achieved during the clinical experience.

The Victim Impact Awareness class is an educational program designed to teach offenders about the human consequences of crime. In a safe environment, offenders are taught how crime affects the victim and the victim's family, friends, and community, and how it also affects them and their own families, friends, and communities. Specific modules address victimization, property crimes, drugs and society, child maltreatment, assault, robbery, violent crimes, gang mentality, and restorative justice. A key element of the classes is the direct involvement of victims and victim service providers. They tell their personal stories of being victimized or of helping victims to reconstruct their lives after a traumatic crime. Offenders learn the ripple effect caused by crime and understand the value of repairing harm.
