About This Pathway

The Design, Media, & the Arts pathway powers you to have a successful career creating and sharing ideas. Follow this pathway and you could create graphics, illustrations, websites, or videos using the latest technology. You could write or take pictures to influence or help others with your work. How about cooking, baking, and sharing the food you prepare with others in a commercial environment? Or singing, acting, playing a musical instrument professionally, or teaching music? Other options include using your eye for fashion in design, marketing, and retail.

Programs of Study

Animation & Rich Media

The Animation and Rich Media program prepares students for positions in the Animation and Rich Media industry.

Art Discipline

The Art discipline will prepare students for creative opportunities in professional settings, such as art appreciation, drawing, painting, art history and more.

Culinary Arts

The Culinary Arts program prepares students to enter culinary positions within hotels, restaurants, clubs or institutions with some select jobs in dining room service, catering, or management.

Fashion

A career in the Fashion program could include management, designing, buying, marketing or promotion, sales, customer service or visual merchandising.

Graphic Design

The Graphic Design program explores the exciting and challenging field of graphic design while focusing on both the creative and technical aspects of the industry.

Interior Design

DMACC’s comprehensive 2 year interior design program will prepare you for a career in the interior design industry.

Journalism: Transfer Major

This Associate of Arts transfer degree is designed for students transferring to the University of Northern Iowa to study Journalism.

Music Discipline

The Music discipline will prepare students for creative opportunities in professional settings, such as music appreciation, music fundamentals, concert choir, music history and more.

Photography

The Photography program is designed to prepare students for employment as commercial photographers.

Theatre

The Theatre program is designed to provide students of all backgrounds and experience an opportunity to train in a focused and objective acting training environment.

Video Production

The Video Production program is designed to prepare students for employment as video producers, videographers, camera operators, grips/electricians, sound mixers, editors and motion graphic designers.

Web Development

The Web Development program is intended for the student who is interested in designing and building commercial website applications.

Liberal Arts

Students planning on transferring to a four-year college/university may complete their freshman and sophomore requirements at Des Moines Area Community College.

Award Information

AA:Associate in Arts Degree. An AA is a degree made up of 64 credits you can earn at DMACC with the intent of continuing your education at a 4-year college or university. An AA is a relatively inexpensive way to take care of your general education requirements.

AS:Associate in Science Degree. An AS is also a degree made up of 64 credits you can earn at DMACC with the intent of continuing your education at a 4-year college or university. An AS is a relatively inexpensive way to take care of your general education requirements.

AAS:Associate in Applied Science Degree. An AAS is a degree made up of 64-86 credits you can earn at DMACC that prepares you to be ready to enter the related market or industry.

Certificate:A Certificate of Specialization has a maximum of 48 credits and can typically be completed in 52 weeks that prepares you to be ready to enter the related market or industry. Certificates are not intended to have a general education component.

Diploma:A Diploma has 30-48 credits and can typically be completed in 52 weeks that prepares you to be ready to enter the related market or industry. Diploma’s are primarily discipline specific, with a small amount of general education required.

Nondegree:Continuing education coursework to support your desire to update or learn new skills, advance in your current job, or renew a professional license.
