About This Pathway

The Building Trades & Transportation pathway takes your desire to use your hands in your work and launch a rewarding career in a number of in-demand fields. You could channel your passions for cars and trucks to become an auto mechanic or collision specialist. You could master the skills to design, build and finish structures like houses and office buildings. Learning to maintain and repair power equipment and becoming an electrician, HVAC specialist, or work in building maintenance are options with this pathway.

Programs of Study

Architectural Technologies

The Architectural Technologies program is designed to develop the proper skills and knowledge required for satisfactory entrance into the field of architectural drafting and detailing.

ASEP - General Motors

The Automotive Service Educational Program (ASEP) is a two-year automotive program designed to prepare students for employment as a GM dealership technician. 

ASSET - Ford

The Automotive Student Service Educational Training program (ASSET) is a two-year automotive program designed to prepare students to be competent and professional entry-level Ford or Lincoln dealership technicians.

Auto Collision Technology

The Auto Collision Technology program is designed to prepare students for employment in the highly technological auto collision industry and to update those already employed.

Automotive Mechanics Technology

The Auto Mechanics Technology program is designed to prepare students for employment in the high-technology automotive service industry and to update those who are already employed.

Construction Management

Construction Management Technology is a five-semester Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree program where students can obtain their degree by completing an additional three terms of coursework in general education and management. 

C​AP - Chrysler Mopar

The Mopar Career Automotive Program (CAP) is a two-year automotive program designed to upgrade the technical competence and professional level of the incoming Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram dealership technician.

Diesel Technology

The Diesel Technology program prepares students for a career in the area of diesel repair, maintenance and testing of diesel engines, power trains and components of trucks and heavy construction equipment.

Electrical Trades

The Electrical Trades program prepares students for entry-level positions in residential, commercial and industrial wiring. 

Electric Utility Technology

The Electric Utility program is dedicated to offering students the practical experience, targeted curriculum, and focused training to become a highly skilled apprentice in the electrical utility industry. 

Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration Technology

The Heating, Air Conditioning, Refrigeration Technology program provides the theory, knowledge and skills of refrigeration, air conditioning, heating and ventilation equipment for systems in residential and light commercial structures.

Honda PACT

The Honda Professional Automotive Career Training (PACT) program is designed to prepare students for employment as a Honda or Acura dealership technician.

Power Equipment Technology

This program will prepare students to be technically competent in the areas of electric systems, hydraulics, and powertrains on gasoline and diesel equipment, including residential and powersports, as well as commercial and light construction equipment. 

Liberal Arts

Students planning on transferring to a four-year college/university may complete their freshman and sophomore requirements at Des Moines Area Community College.

Award Information

AA: Associate in Arts Degree. An AA is a degree made up of 64 credits you can earn at DMACC with the intent of continuing your education at a 4-year college or university. An AA is a relatively inexpensive way to take care of your general education requirements.

AS: Associate in Science Degree. An AS is also a degree made up of 64 credits you can earn at DMACC with the intent of continuing your education at a 4-year college or university. An AS is a relatively inexpensive way to take care of your general education requirements.

AAS: Associate in Applied Science Degree. An AAS is a degree made up of 64-86 credits you can earn at DMACC that prepares you to be ready to enter the related market or industry.

Certificate: A Certificate of Specialization has a maximum of 48 credits and can typically be completed in 52 weeks that prepares you to be ready to enter the related market or industry. Certificates are not intended to have a general education component.

Diploma: A Diploma has 30-48 credits and can typically be completed in 52 weeks that prepares you to be ready to enter the related market or industry. Diploma’s are primarily discipline specific, with a small amount of general education required.

Nondegree: Continuing education coursework to support your desire to update or learn new skills, advance in your current job, or renew a professional license.
