Veterans Train Free

​​DMACC Transportation Institute is one of only 21 schools in the nation that was recently awarded a grant to offer free training to current/former members of the US Armed Services (including National Guard) and/or their immediate families to get their Class A CDL. A few spots are also available to help increase training opportunities for candidates from underserved communities.

This Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator Safety Training Grant is funded through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), a division of the US Department of Transportation. The purpose of this grant is: 1) to expand the number of CDL holders who have enhanced operator safety training, 2) provide opportunities for current/former members of the US Armed Services and their spouses/children an opportunity to obtain jobs in trucking or bussing, and 3) help increase training opportunities for candidates from underserved communities.

All CDL training for this program must be complete by 9/30/2024.

3 Steps to apply and qualify for the funding​:

  1. Fill out the FMCSA CMVOST Grant Application.

  2. Submit the required documents to Lori Card, Pathway Navigator for consideration:

    1. Grant application (see step 1)

    2. Copy of DD214 of veteran/military member. Other documentation may be considered.

    3. State issued documentation that proves your identity or relationship to the military personnel (birth certificate, adoption papers, marriage license, etc.)

    4. Certified 5-year Iowa Driving Record (MVR – Motor Vehicle Record) from the Iowa DOT.

    Documents can be brought in to the DMACC Transportation Institute, scanned and uploaded to your student portal after you have applied, or scanned and e-mailed to Lori.

  3. Schedule a pre-enrollment interview. Once documents are submitted to Lori, she will schedule a pre-enrollment interview with you. The purpose for this interview is to review documentation, discuss any barriers to employment/class attendance, and answer any remaining questions about the grant. When all above steps are complete: Lori will approve the funding so you can register for an upcoming class.

To apply for the CDL program: Go to CDL.DMACC.EDU; click on Entrance Requirements and do steps 1-3 to get started. You will need your IA Driver’s license, IA driving record, Medical Examiner’s Certificate from a DOT physical, and your Class A Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) from the Iowa DOT to confirm a seat in an upcoming class.

YOUR RESPONSIBILITY ONCE YOU ACCEPT THE FUNDING:​ By accepting this grant to pay for your class, you are expected to attend all classes, obtain your Class A CDL, become employed as a driver, and report your success to Lori so your success can be recorded.
