Annual Event Raises $17,814 for Student Scholarships
The eighth annual Shrimp and Bingo Scholarship Fundraiser raised $17,814 for the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Foundation to fund DMACC Water Environmental Technology (WET) program scholarships for students. More than $148,330 has been raised in this annual fundraiser. A total of 223 students have received scholarships from this fundraiser over the past eight years.
Representatives from the water and wastewater treatment industry, DMACC employees, including President Rob Denson and students in the program, attended the annual event last August. They enjoyed a meal of shrimp, andouille sausage, corn, potatoes and desserts. More than $4,500 worth of prizes were distributed to the winners of bingo games held throughout the evening. The prizes included tickets to a gourmet dinner prepared by DMACC Iowa Culinary Institute® (ici®) students, a Des Moines weekend package, an Iowa Getaway package, a tool set, gift certificates of various amounts, and numerous smaller gift certificates.
The money raised at the shrimp and bingo event helps fund the scholarships provided to the DMACC students enrolled in the program,” said Trevor Kleppe, DMACC Program Chair and Water Environment Technology Lead Instructor. “These scholarships are truly difference makers for the students.”
Kleppe said the water and wastewater industry needs highly skilled workers to keep pace with the demand to modernize; as well as the numerous employees in the profession approaching retirement age.
The annual Shrimp and Bingo event is a collaboration between DMACC and several industry groups including the Iowa Association of Municipal Utilities (IAMU), Iowa Association of Water Agencies (IAWA), Iowa Water Environment Association (IAWEA), Iowa Section of American Water Works Association (IA-AWWA) and the Iowa Rural Water Association (IRWA).
Planning is already underway for this year’s Shrimp and Bingo event to be held
Saturday, August 22, 2020.
