James Thompson set to lead DMACC'S growing music program that includes Visiting Professor Dr. Simon Estes.
Dr. James Thompson is Des Moines Area Community College's (DMACC) new Director of the Music Department. He was hired by the College after serving as Iowa City High's music director for nine years.
Thompson is in charge of the day-to-day operations of the DMACC music department. His current focus is to expand the music course catalog and review music course assessment.
He is also directing the Concert Choir and Chamber Choir, in addition to teaching applied voice lessons, applied piano lessons and three sections of online Music Appreciation.
“My vision is to make DMACC the regional destination for students wishing to pursue music at the post-secondary level. We have a number of ways for students to be involved in music at DMACC," said Thompson.
Thompson wants to provide students with a comprehensive two-year music education and make it possible for students to transfer and finish a bachelor's degree in fewer than two additional years.
He received his bachelor of music from Cornell College, followed by his masters of music from Boston University, lastly earning his doctoral of musical arts from the University of Iowa.
DMACC offers various academic music courses, vocal and instrumental ensembles, and applied lessons in voice, piano, guitar, brass, strings and woodwinds.
“We are honored to have international opera singer Dr. Simon Estes on faculty," said Thompson. “Our adjunct faculty are knowledgeable, dedicated, professional musicians who are extremely skilled in their respective disciplines. Whether students are interested in music as a career or as a hobby, DMACC will help them with their goals and aspirations."
