In My Boots 5K Run, Walk, Ruck

Posted 4/12/2018

WHAT:

The fifth annual Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) Boone Campus “In My Boots 5K Run, Walk, Ruck” will be held Saturday, April 14 at McHose Park in Boone.

WHO:

Hundreds of DMACC students, faculty, staff, community members, veterans, current military members and others who support Iowa’s deployed men and women will take part in the event, either by walking, running or participating in a military ruck. A military ruck consists of carrying a pack weighing 30 pounds at an alternating run and walk pace for 5 to 15 kilometers. It’s part of soldier basic training and a standard test of soldier endurance.

WHERE:

McHose Park, Boone, Iowa

WHEN:

Saturday, April 14, 2018 at 10 a.m.

WHY:

DMACC Sociology/Psychology Professor and Major Sean Taylor created the “In My Boots 5K” in 2014 and has been deployed numerous times. The run/walk/ruck raises awareness of what members of our military go through during basic training as well as the struggles many American service men and women encounter after returning from combat.

The event is now organized by the In My Boots Student Group. In addition, a Shadow Run involving soldiers deployed in overseas units, will be running in conjunction with this event.

All proceeds from the In My Boots 5K Run, Walk, Ruck will benefit Paws & Effect", an organization that provides service animals and support to Iowa veterans.

The DMACC Boone campus Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society chapter will also be holding a food drive during the race. All food collected will be donated to local shelters.

Last minute registration are being accepted; commemorative T-shirts will be distributed to all participants in the race on a first-come, first-served basis per registration order. To register prior to Saturday, go to www.getmeregistered.com or you can register the day of the race prior to 10 a.m.
