Volunteer Opportunity: Literacy Coaches Needed at Adult Literacy Center at DMACC

Posted September 28, 2023

Did you know that 1 in 6 Iowa adults are living with a hidden barrier to achieving their goals because they can't read?

The Adult Literacy Center at DMACC is a free resource for Central Iowa adults who need help with their reading, writing and/or speaking skills. The Center's mission is to improve literacy, resulting in enhanced self-esteem, daily living and lifelong learning. And volunteers help make it possible!

How can you help?

Right now, the Center is looking for some additional Volunteer Literacy Coaches to work with local adults on their reading, writing and/or speaking skills. Volunteers work with an individual student, which is an impactful and rewarding experience for both the student and the volunteer. All DMACC students are encouraged to consider volunteering! Plus, if you are interested in pursuing a career as a teacher or working in a human services field, this is an excellent opportunity to gain additional experience and build your resume.

Next steps:

If you'd like to learn more and get involved, the Adult Literacy Center at DMACC will hold its next Volunteer Orientation Session from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. on Thur., Oct. 12th, at the DMACC Urban Campus in downtown Des Moines.

To attend the session, just RSVP to Vickie Merrifield by calling (515) 241-7517 or emailing vlmerrifield@dmacc.edu.

Also, if you aren't available to attend/have a scheduling conflict with the Oct. 12th session but would still like to learn more, please be sure to contact Vickie as well.
