Now-April 6th: DMACC Ankeny Theatre & Grand View Univ. Co-Production of 'Head Over Heels'

Posted March 28, 2024

HOH_Monitor Ad.png

The laugh-out-loud love story is set to the music of The Go-Go’s, the iconic,1980's all-female rock band

  • This marks the second time that DMACC and Grand View University have worked together to perform a play.

  • Performances will be held at the Grand View Viking Theatre (March 25th-28th) and the Black Box Theatre at the DMACC Ankeny Campus (April 3rd-6th).

  • All show dates are FREE to attend and open to the public.

The DMACC Ankeny Theatre and Grand View University (GVU) Theatre are teaming up once again, this time with a co-production of the musical comedy “Head Over Heels” that will feature free performances at both colleges, March 25th-April 6th.

This marks the second time the two colleges have worked together on a theatre production. Their first collaboration was a co-production of the play “Ghost Bike” by Laura Jacqmin in 2018.

“At the time of our first collaboration, DMACC and Grand View University both had relatively small theatre departments, so collaborating offered us an opportunity to do a big-cast show,” said Carl Lindberg, DMACC Theatre Program Chair. “The success of that show back in 2018 led us to revisit the idea of a co-production, and one may have happened sooner if it weren’t for the height of the COVID pandemic preventing it. We’re excited to be working together again.”

“Head Over Heels” is a new musical comedy that was developed by the visionaries who rocked Broadway with “Hedwig and the Angry Inch, “Avenue Q” and "Spring Awakening.” It features a laugh-out-loud love story that’s set to the hit music of the iconic, 1980's all-female rock band The Go-Go’s, including their hit songs “We Got the Beat,” “Our Lips Are Sealed” and “Vacation,” and Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven is a Place on Earth” and “Mad About You.” The story follows the escapades of a royal family on an outrageous journey to save their beloved kingdom from extinction – only to discover the key to their realm’s survival lies within each of their own hearts.

Reserve your free tickets

All performances of “Head Over Heels” are FREE to attend and open to the public. Doors will open 30 minutes prior to the start time.

  • Fri., April 5th, 7:30 p.m., Black Box Theatre, DMACC Ankeny Campus

  • Sat., April 6th, 7:30 p.m., Black Box Theatre, DMACC Ankeny Campus (ASL-interpreted performance)

“Head Over Heels” is based upon “The Arcadia” by Sir Philip Sidney and was conceived by Jeff Whitty and adapted by James Magruder.

DMACC and Grand View University’s co-production of the play is being directed by Kristin Larson, Chair of Theatre Arts & Speech and Theatre Professor at Grand View University.

Casting was done collaboratively between the two schools, and the play’s creative team includes multiple faculty and staff members from both DMACC and Grand View University, as well as professionals from the Des Moines Metro area.

Lindberg said the play had been a lot of fun to rehearse and prepare.

“I think the Go-Go’s music has been an absolute delight for everyone to work on,” Lindberg said. “The play is a ton of fun. With the music and costumes, the language and characters are heightened. There are puppets, too. And I think all of that, together with the play's themes, will really connect with our student audience members.”

DMACC Men's Basketball Team Drops 89-61 Decision to DDCC

Posted March 22, 2024

Bears fall to 29-5 for the season

  • Sophomores Angelo Winkel, Trey Lewis and James Glenn lead DMACC with 13 points apiece.

  • Bears fall behind early in the first half and never recover.

  • DMACC faces Parkland College in an elimination game on March 22nd.

Top-seeded Davidson-Davie Community College (DDCC) used a 14-0 run early in the game to open up a 14-4 lead against the DMACC men's basketball team and handed the eight-seeded Bears an 89-61 loss in the quarterfinals of the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) 2024 Division II Men's Basketball Championship Tournament on March 21st at Danville, Ill.

DMACC, which fell to 29-5, got an early 4-0 lead on a three-point basket by sophomore Trey Lewis of Johnston and a free throw from sophomore Angelo Winkel of Algona but went two and a half minutes without a point and DDCC took advantage with a 14-0 run and never trailed the rest of the way.

DMACC closed to within five points on three occasions in the first half but got no closer as DDCC took a 45-34 lead into halftime and outscored the Bears 11-1 over the first four and a half minutes of the second half to take a commanding 56-35 lead with 15 minutes, 33 seconds, to play. DDCC led by as many as 28 points in the half and DMACC never got closer than 18 points.

Winkel, Lewis and sophomore James Glenn of Altoona led DMACC with 13 points apiece. The Bears, who shot 51 percent, including 38 percent from three-point range in a 98-74 win over Pima Community College (PCC) in their tournament opener on March 19th, didn't come close to that against DDCC. They were 23-of-54 from the field for 42 percent and made just eight of 24 three-point attempts for 33 percent. DMACC made seven of 13 free throws for 54 percent.

Turnovers hurt the Bears as they committed 20, leading to 23 points for DDCC. The Storm got 58 points in the paint and 26 points from the bench.

DDCC came away with a 38-31 advantage on the boards with sophomore Victor Desmond of Onalaska, Wis., leading DMACC with seven rebounds. Desmond also topped the Bears in assists with four.

DMACC will face seventh-seeded Parkland College (PC) in a consolation bracket game at 3 p.m. on March 22nd. PC is also 29-5. The DMACC-PC winner will advance to the fifth-place game March 23rd at 1 p.m. The 2023-24 season will come to a close for the DMACC-PCC loser.

April 1st-4th: FREE National Crime Victims' Rights Week Educational & Awareness Activities at DMACC

Posted March 11, 2024

Activities will be held April 1st-4th at DMACC locations in Ames, Ankeny, Boone, Carroll, Des Moines, Newton, Perry and beyond

NCVRW24.jpg

  • This year's National Crime Victims' Rights Week theme is “How would you help? Options, services, and hope for crime survivors."

  • It is critical that we all work to create safe environments for crime victims to share what happened to them; by doing so, we're able to offer support, options for life-saving services and hope.

  • All DMACC activities supporting National Crime Victims' Rights Week are FREE to attend and open to the public; a complete list of planned activities across the College can be found at ncvrw.dmacc.edu.

DMACC will honor crime victims and survivors by hosting a series of free educational and awareness-focused activities April 1st-4th in support of National Crime Victims' Rights Week (NCVRW), which takes place at the end of April this year.

National Crime Victims' Rights Week has been observed in Iowa and across the nation every April since 1981, with a goal of raising awareness of crime victims' issues and rights and introducing community members to available resources and services in their area.

“We are a community first and foremost at DMACC," said Dr. Samantha O'Hara, a DMACC Criminal Justice Professor at the College's Ankeny Campus. “And as a community, it's crucial that we listen to victims and support them throughout the criminal justice process and beyond. By providing a variety of educational and awareness-building opportunities, our goal is to help everyone feel more connected to available resources and services."

According to a report from the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, there were more than 6.6 million violent victimizations of persons age 12 or older in the United States in 2022, up from 4.6 million the year before. Additionally, only about 2 in 5 (42 percent) of violent victimizations were reported to police in 2022, the most recent year with complete data available.

How would you help?

The 2024 NCVRW theme – How would you help? Options, services, and hope for crime survivors – asks all of us how we can help crime victims. Do you know the services available in your local community? Are you prepared if someone you know tells you about a victimization? Does your organization use trauma-informed strategies? How can we all work to create supportive and safe environments for crime victims to share what happened, access services and perhaps find healing?

As a reflection of this theme, DMACC will host a variety of activities, April 1st-4th, to help share information about victims' rights and resources and to underscore the importance of listening to survivors' voices in every space where decisions are made.

Activities will range from a presentation on “The Cari Farver Homicide: A Cold Case in the Digital Age" from Special Deputy Anthony Kava with the Pottawattamie County Sheriff's Office and as seen in the Netflix documentary “Lover, Stalker, Killer" (April 1st, DMACC Ankeny Campus) to a story walk for the book "Catching Flight: Soaring on the Wings of Birds" by Rebekah Lowell (April 2nd, DMACC Boone Campus) to a Domestic Violence Simulation presented by Children & Families of Iowa (April 4th, DMACC Ames Hunziker Center).

A complete listing of DMACC NCVRW activities can be found at ncvrw.dmacc.edu, including events happening at each of the following DMACC locations:

Participating DMACC programs include Criminal Justice, Sociology and Psychology in the College's Public and Community Services Pathway; Fashion, Graphic Design and Culinary Arts in the DMACC Design, Media and Arts Pathway; and Welding in the DMACC Engineering and Manufacturing Pathway. Additionally, the DMACC Boone Campus Social Justice Club, DMACC Campus Chronicle student newspaper, DMACC Criminal Justice Club, DMACC Counseling Services, DMACC Libraries, DMACC Fashion Design Club and DMACC Student Activities Councils are collaborating and supporting this important observance.

All DMACC community members, as well as the members of the general public, are welcome and encouraged to attend. Media members interested in covering any of the activities should contact Lisa Schmitz at (515) 964-6813 or lmschmitz@dmacc.edu.

  • 9 a.m. – Will (Keeps) Holmes, founder of the Starts Right Here initiative: Will Holmes, better known as Will Keeps, was born into a traumatic life on the South Side of Chicago and found a form of love and security when he joined the Blackstones gang at age 13. Two years later, Will witnessed a rival gang murder his friend. When the gun was pointed to Will's head, it jammed and he was then nearly beaten and tortured to death, leaving him badly scarred inside and out. Though he survived, this was only the beginning of Will's second act, a life devoted to saving others. Coupling advocacy with music, Will found that his God-given abilities and his story of bravery and perseverance empower others to go down a better path. Will has also written a new memoir, “WillPower," that was published in fall 2023.

  • 10 a.m. – Maureen “Mo" Beck, competitive climber: Mo Beck was born without her left hand, but that didn't stop her from picking up the sport of climbing at age 12. As a competitive climber, she has won nine national titles and two world titles. Dr. Stern led NASA's New Horizons mission to the Pluto system and the Kuiper Belt. As NASA's chief for all space and Earth science programs, he oversaw 93 separate flight missions and a program of over 3,000 research grants, with a record 10 new major flight projects starting during his NASA tenure.
